Instagram starts testing new feature ‘Collab’ in India and UK


Bengaluru: Since collaborations drive a significant chunk of content creation on Instagram, the Facebook Inc.-owned company is giving its users the tools to co-author posts and short videos more easily.

Instagram has started testing a new feature called ‘Collab’ in India and the United Kingdom that lets users invite another account as a collaborator on a post or a Reel. If they accept, both accounts will appear in the header of the post or the Reel, and it will be shared to the followers of both accounts. They will also be able to view the shared feedback on the content.

Users having this feature will be able to see an option to tag people when they upload a Feed post or a Reel, through which they can search for an account and add them as a collaborator, provided they accept the invite. Following this, the account will be added to the tag screen and also noted in the header of the user’s post.

At present, only public accounts can be invited as a co-author, the company said.

The move comes a week after Facebook said
it will invest over $1 billion by the end of next year to support content creators, as it aims to take on Google’s YouTube and ByteDance’s TikTok to woo more creators to its platform.

This investment will include new bonus programmes for creators who hit certain milestones using the company’s creative and monetisation tools like in-stream ads, live streams and tipping feature Stars, among others The company had said it will also provide seed funding for creators to produce their content. “Our goal is to help as many creators as possible find sustainable, long-term success on our apps,” Facebook had said in a blogpost.

In March, Instagram launched the Remix feature on Reels, which lets users react or respond to other people’s videos—quite similar to TikTok’s Duet feature.

Sensitive Content Control

On Tuesday, Instagram also launched a new feature called
Sensitive Content Control that will enable users to choose how much of potentially sensitive content appears in its content discovery destination ‘Explore’.

“We recognise that everybody has different preferences for what they want to see in Explore, and this control will give people more choice over what they see,” the company said in a blogpost.

The new feature will be available through the app’s settings menu and will let users choose to allow less or more content that could be upsetting or offensive. One can change their selection anytime, although the ability to allow more sensitive content will not be available to users below 18 years.

Among the content that Instagram
considers sensitive are those that may depict violence, sexually explicit or suggestive and those that promote the use of certain regulated products, such as tobacco or vaping products, adult products and services, or pharmaceutical drugs.

The company will remove graphically violent content, content that contains adult nudity or sexual activity and those that attempt to sell or trade most regulated goods.
