Odisha projects daily Covid cases will cross 13,000 by May 15 | India News

BHUBANESHWAR: The state government on Tuesday projected that the number of daily Covid infections will more than double in the days to come and cross 13,000 by May 15 as against the current 6,000-6,500, forcing chief minister Naveen Patnaik to ask the state machinery to be prepared for the worst possible scenario.
“We should be prepared to take on Covid like we plan against natural disasters,” the chief minister said while reviewing the situation with top government functionaries and district collectors.
Naveen expressed concern over the high rate of infection in western Odisha districts and in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. “The double and triple mutants are spreading fast and our youths are also getting affected. In some cases, their condition is turning critical,” Naveen was quoted as saying.
As per the health department projection, the number of daily infections could reach as high as 13,249 cases by May 15 at the current growth rate of 1.57% on a weekly basis.
Calculating the onset of the second wave from February 18, the health department projection states that cumulative cases is likely to reach around 2.04 lakh, increasing to more than double from the current 90,135 in the next two weeks. Active cases will rise to around 1.02 lakhcompared 50,958 at present.
Additional chief secretary (health) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said it is estimated that around 5,815 patients will be in hospital by May 15, including 2,040 in ICU, compared to 2,942 in hospital now and 1050 in ICU. Around 438 patients would be on ventilator by mid-May compared to 223 now. Mohapatra said the government is ready with infrastructure, logistics and manpower accordingly.
“Though the overall occupancy in hospitals is a comfortable 33%, and ICU occupancy at 48%. There is pressure in districts with high positivity rate like Sambalpur, Sundargarh and other western Odisha districts,” Mohapatra said.
For streamlining availability of beds, the government would soon start an online real-time bed monitoring system so that patients can be easily shifted to hospitals having vacant beds.
Based on current availability of oxygen cylinders, 32,876 beds can be supported with oxygen. With rising number of patients, the state’s oxygen consumption has increased to 42.10 MT per day as on Tuesday. The state has a daily production capacity of 129.68 MT through cylinders and 375 MT through liquid medical oxygen.
The state has been currently consuming 1500 vials of Remdesivir injection per day and currently has a stock of more than 44,000 vials. It has floated tenders for three lakh more vials. Around 5,000 tablets of Favipiravir is being used per day now. The state has a stock of more than 6 lakh and has floated tenders for 20 lakh more.
